Their analysis covered 17 studies that met their criteria, and the results were promising. Self-massage sessions ranged from single sessions to extended periods of 8-12 weeks, with four weeks being the most common duration prescribed. These techniques were applied to manage various conditions, including arthritis pain in the knee, neck, and hand, as well as back and neck pain, stress, and anxiety.

Out of the 11 studies that exclusively employed self-massage, seven showed significant improvements in various measured outcomes. These improvements included a reduction in neck and back pain, lower stress and anxiety levels, improved fatigue, enhanced sleep quality, and an overall sense of well-being. Furthermore, self-massage provided additional health benefits by improving anxiety, depression, pain threshold, and pain intensity.

The researchers conclude that self-massage is a viable option for managing musculoskeletal pain in chronic conditions. It can be employed as a standalone approach or to complement professional massage therapy. Self-massage techniques are easy to learn and apply, making them a valuable tool for chronic pain management.
